HAD THE TALENT. Throughout the war, the military built excellent baseball teams around professionals, recruiting and trading players like any other league. One player, perhaps in a slump, discovered his value when his coach traded him for a life raft. The best won an impressive number of games, including victories over major league teams. As physical training specialists, many players helped get and keep the troops into combat-ready condition.
