joined the 3,000-Hit Club on September 16, 1996, three years to the day after fellow St. Paul native Dave Winfield collected his 3,000th safety. In the first inning of the game, Molitor singled for hit #2999. Four innings later, Molitor joined the Club with a triple to the right field alley, thus becoming the first man to join the Club with a three-bagger.

Molitor attended the University of Minnesota before beginning his big league career. Likewise, the next player to garner 3,000 hits attended college (San Diego State) in the same city in which he played big league ball. That man is Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres.
