became the first National Leaguer in twenty years to enter the 3,000-Hit Club when he singled in the first inning against the Montreal Expos, August 6, 1999. The historic hit came six years to the day after Gwynn had collected career hit #2000 and marked the first time a player had reached 3,000 hits on foreign soil. The date was also the birthday of Gwynn's mother, Vendella.

Gwynn's milestone hit came one day after Mark McGwire slammed his 500th career home run, and one day prior to Wade Boggs becoming the 23rd player to join the 3,000-Hit Club.
