1889 |
In 1889, the American Association Brooklyn Bridegrooms became the first big league club to wear checked uniforms, although amateur teams had worn the style as early as the 1860s. The previous season the trend-setting Brooklynites joined Detroit and Washington of the National League in introducing pinstriped uniforms to the major leagues. In the 20th century, Brooklyn would remain in the forefront of uniform trends, reviving the checked uniform in 1907, 1916 and 1917, experimenting with satin uniforms in the 1940s, and becoming the first major league club to wear uniform numbers on their jersey fronts in 1952. |
