Prior to the 1936 season, the Cincinnati Reds visited the Dominican Republic, winning exhibition matches against the Licey and Escogido teams under the watchful eye of dictator Rafael Trujillo.

The Ciudad Trujillo team of 1937, one of the best teams in history, featured Negro league greats Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell, as well as Cuban superstars Silvio García and Lázaro Salazar. The expensive season caused pro baseball to collapse in the Dominican for 15 years.
