The 1948 plane crash at Rio Verde, which killed nearly the entire Dominican national team, is remembered annually at this Santiago mausoleum. A new team, hastily assembled to take its place, won the amateur world championship, turning tragedy into triumph and initiating a rebirth in Dominican baseball.
