They made good on their promise. Marine airmen
in the "Black Sheep" Squadron promised to shoot down one enemy
aircraft for every baseball cap sent to them by the St. Louis Cardinals.
They received 20 caps but shot down 48 Japanese planes. Wearing their
caps, Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's men pose atop and around a
Corsair fighter.
